he Strengths and Weaknesses of the 4-4-2 Formation

hroughout the past 100 years, multiple football formations and styles have come in and out of fashion (and popularity). Around ten years ago, the 4-4-2 formation was seen as the best choice for most football teams (although these days most managers seem to prefer the 4-5-1 formation instead). This is not to say that it's still not widely used by lots of teams (and used effectively), just that it's not as widely used as it once was.
So why was it so popular? Firstly, because of the way your team is lined up you have strength in numbers all around the pitch. Most expert tacticians state that it works so well because it enables your players to work in pairs, whereby each one has a partner to cover them in case they get caught out of position, and where they are able to work together to play the ball up the pitch.
Having two strikers upfront (i.e. two players to score the goals) gives you a lot more attacking options than if you were to have just one player up front.
This tactic was used so brilliantly by Manchester United in their treble winning season of 1998-1999. It worked especially well for them because the extra attacking options that the formation offers helped to break down the teams that sat back against them and defended deep (as is so often the case when a big team plays a small team).
Although it might seem like the perfect tactic, it is often beaten these days by teams playing a 4-5-1. The reason for this is that by having 5 men in midfield instead of 4 you are able to control the game a lot better.
